Plumbing problems can be made worse by following common myths about plumbing. It is possible to damage fixtures and cause water damage if you follow these misguided beliefs, leading to the need for expensive repairs. The following are some common plumbing myths today. Keep these tips in mind to prevent accidental damage to your plumbing system.
It’s not uncommon to throw cooking grease down the drain as a disposal method. However, did you know that you can clog your pipes even if you pour hot water down the drain with it?
There is a possibility that the grease could solidify or form a gelatinous slime that clogs the pipes, eventually blocking the pipes and causing the contents of the pipes to backflow.
Drain cleaners cause more harm than good. The cleaners are made with harsh chemicals that could cause pipes to steadily deteriorate, affecting the pipe’s integrity and the plumbing system in general.
More troubling is the adverse effect these chemicals can have on the skin, just a splash could cause serious irreversible injuries. Instead of cleaners, plungers and plumbing augers are better suited for removing clogs in sinks, drains and toilets.
Flushable wipes might go down the drain indeed, only to cause more problems, however. Unlike toilet paper, these wipes do not disintegrate and as such can form clogs in packs.
Flushable wipes, alongside paper towels, cotton balls, facial tissues and feminine hygiene products should not be flushed down a toilet because they can clog the sewage system.
While a few small peels of chopped lemon can add freshness and brighten up the odor of a kitchen, forcing chunks down the sink could clog the pipes. Furthermore, citric acid can cause the metal blades to corrode, affecting the potency of the garbage disposal. Instead, tailor-made garbage disposal cleaners should be employed.
On the contrary, it is important to attend swiftly to leaks. When there is a constant leak, gallons of water are wasted, in addition to the chances of the faucet getting worse and causing more water wastage.
Placing a brick in the toilet tank allows little water into the tank, for flushing, hence the assumption that it saves money.
However, tanks are built to hold a volume of water for flushing, a reduction in this could cause improper flushing and eventually clog the system. Worse off, the brick could disintegrate causing harm to the plumbing fixture and the system as a whole.
Sadly, the opposite of this is credible. Ice will almost always dull the impellers (blades) and considerably shorten the disposal’s lifespan.
Many people assume plumbing challenges can be fixed by anyone and opt to fix them without hiring plumbing services. Unless certified and fully equipped for a repair, DIY repairs could lead to more problems and hiring plumbing professionals remains the best option.
